When to Refer or Collaborate

Dental anxiety often sits at the intersection of dentistry, psychology, and broader health. While many patients can be managed within a dental setting, others may benefit from additional support. Referral or collaboration should be considered when anxiety is severe, persistent, or linked to factors such as trauma, agoraphobia, specific phobias (e.g. needles), or strong physical responses like gagging or fainting. Patients who repeatedly avoid care despite motivation to attend are often good candidates for multidisciplinary support. Psychologists can assist with cognitive behavioural therapy, exposure, and trauma-informed care. Hypnotherapists may help with subconscious responses and relaxation. ENT specialists, GPs, or allied health professionals can address contributing physical or sensory factors. Importantly, referral is not a failure of care - it is an extension of it. A collaborative approach allows each professional to work within their expertise, creating a more comprehensive and effective pathway for the patient. When dental and non-dental professionals align, patients are more likely to feel supported, regain confidence, and engage in ongoing care. If helping patients with their dental anxiety isn’t for you, or you feel like you can’t commit the time to it yet, you can refer to a Fear-Aware Dentist on our directory.
